    What Is Stage Three Breast Cancer?

    Tumor Size: Stage III breast cancer typically involves a tumor larger than 5 centimeters (cm) in diameter. At this stage, the tumor may have grown beyond the breast tissue and into nearby structures such as the chest wall or skin.

    Lymph Node Involvement: Stage III breast cancer often includes the spread of cancer cells to nearby lymph nodes in the axilla (underarm) region. The cancer may have spread to multiple lymph nodes or formed larger clumps within the nodes.

    Extent of Spread: In some cases, stage III breast cancer may also involve the spread of cancer cells to nearby tissues or structures, such as the chest wall or skin. This indicates a more advanced stage of the disease and may require more aggressive treatment approaches.

    Whats Happening During Stage Three Breast Cancer?

    Tumor Growth:     Cancer cells continue to grow and divide rapidly, forming a larger mass or tumor. These cells have acquired mutations that enable them to evade the body's normal mechanisms that control cell growth and division.

    Genetic Instability: As cancer cells continue to reproduce additional mutations can lead to increased genetic instability. This can lead to more aggressive growth, treatment resistance, or even new cancer types.

    Metastasis: Stage 3 breast cancer often involves the spread of cancer cells to nearby lymph nodes, particularly those in the armpit. Cancer cells can break away from the primary tumor and travel through the lymphatic system to other parts of the body, such as the bones, liver, lungs, or brain.

    Angiogenesis: Cancer cells stimulate the formation of new blood vessels to ensure a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients to support their growth. This enables the tumor to sustain rapid expansion and the spread of cancer cells to distant sites.
